Polynucleotides

The latest revolutionary bio-revitalising injectable Aesthetic treatment

What are polynucleotides and how can it be beneficial for our skin health?

After several years of research and multiple studies, scientists have produced a ground breaking advancement in Regenerative Aesthetic Medicine - Polynucleotides. Polynucleotide injectable gel contains highly purified DNA fractions extracted from salmon trout. Polynucleotides have been proven in several studies to promote cell repair and regeneration and stimulate your skin cells to produce more collagen and elastin leading to healthier, more youthful looking skin.

As we age, our skin structure loses firmness and elasticity and this leads to the emergence of fine lines and wrinkles. Compared to other injectable treatments, research has shown that polynucleotides have better ability to stimulate skin regeneration at a cellular level by stimulating our skin cells - fibroblasts to naturally increase production of collagen and elastin and repair damaged skin cells. This results in enhanced skin vitality and a naturally youthful and revitalised complexion.

Benefits of polynucleotides:

  • -Has bio-stimulating effect - stimulates our skin cells to produce collagen and elastin
  • -Has anti-inflammatory effect- reduces redness and swelling and can help soothe irritated skin
  • -Has detoxifying effects - acts as a free radical scavenger- which results in anti-oxidant properties
  • -Has moisturising and hydrating properties
  • -Improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • -Improves skin resilience, tone, texture and pore size
  • -Has wound healing properties (eg. in scars)

 Where can it be used?

Polynucleotides are injected into the skin and it can be effectively used for various facial areas including under the eyes, neck and even the jawline and cheekbones. Currently, the most sought after application tends to be the under eye area and this is revolutionising under eye rejuvenation cosmetic procedures.

As the cold weather is approaching, it is beginning to have an impact on our skin which can compromise our skin health significantly. That’s the reason why it’s important to take extra care of our skin during the winter months to ensure it is well hydrated and protected to meet the demands of the harsh, cold winter weather.

Exposure to cold air can drop the moisture content of our skin and this can make our skin dry and trigger conditions such as xerosis (dry skin) or eczema (itchy, dry, reddish patches or lesions on the skin), cracking of the skin which can cause germs to enter leading to infections of the skin.

The heating system indoors can also cause a detrimental effect on your skin. Most heating systems dry out the air in the room which can also exacerbate dryness of the skin. Moreover, the temperature fluctuations caused by going from inside to outside and vice versa can cause the blood vessels to contract and expand which can result in redness, broken veins and inflammation.

Here are few tips on how to protect your skin from the cold winter weather:

1.      Maintain appropriate hydration/moisture in your skin: Using appropriate medical grade skin care products to keep your skin well hydrated. Skin boosters are also very effective for maintaining skin hydration

2.      Keep your body well hydrated; drink plenty of water.

3.      Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet which includes plenty of anti-oxidants.

4.      Avoid using too much cleansers/soap on your skin- These can alter the skin’s pH and remove the skin’s natural moisturizers. Using gentle or hydrating cleansers which can prevent this from happening.

5.      Keeping the air indoors humidified can be beneficial. Dry air can pull the moisture from your skin. Room humidifiers can be useful.

6.      Protect our skin from the cold air by using protective clothing and avoid frost bite.

7.      Remember to wear SPF when going outside as UV rays are always present in the atmosphere, even on a cloudy day.

It had been the most hotly anticipated thing to happen in the aesthetics industry in years when the Keogh review finally published its findings and outlined its recommendations for the future of the aesthetics market in 2013. The independent review sets out how it would like to see the sector better regulated, practitioners better trained and people having proper redress if things go wrong.

The key elements the review group felt would contribute to a successful and safe industry included:

·      Making all dermal fillers prescription only

·      Ensuring all practitioners are properly qualified for all the procedures they offer, including people offering injectables such as dermal fillers or Botox.

·      An ombudsman to oversee all private health care including cosmetic procedures to assist those who have been treated poorly.

The review was led by the then NHS Medical Director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh after being commissioned by the Government following the PIP breast implant scandal, which exposed significant lapses in product quality, after care and record keeping. It also drew attention to widespread use of misleading advertising, inappropriate marketing and unsafe practices across the sector.

The review looked at how to protect patients and tackle unsafe practices. It has also looked at the products used for surgical and non-surgical procedures, the people who administer them, the way they are advertised and the advice and support patients and consumers are given.

The committee was determined that the production of dermal fillers should fall under the same controls as other implants as this will ensure that only those fillers that have passed vigorous appraisals of safety will be available, and only those with appropriate skill will be able to administer them.

Reference to regulating lasers however was notably absent from the review's recommendations, despite the potentially negative permanent effects they can have when administered by unqualified providers.

Other key recommendations were:

·      Obtaining consent should not be dismissed as a casual irrelevance, so that providers are obliged to ensure that people are aware of the implications and risks of procedure and that they have adequate time to consider this information before proceeding with intervention;

·      An advertising code of conduct should be developed and compliance should be mandatory for all practitioners; and

·      Insurance products should be developed to protect patients in the event of product failure, or provider insolvency.

Review chairman Professor Sir Bruce Keogh said, “At the heart of this report is the person who chooses to have a cosmetic procedure. We have heard terrible reports about people who have trusted a cosmetic practitioner to help them but, when things have gone wrong, they have been left high and dry with no help. These people have not had the safety net that those using the NHS have. This needs to change.

“We would like to see everyone who chooses to have any cosmetic procedure better protected. We would like to see people who carry out procedures trained to a high standard. We would like the public to feel confident they are going to be well looked after and, if things go wrong, that they will be supported. And ultimately, if someone needs to step in on the side of patients, we think there should be an ombudsman to do that.

“This isn’t just about the past and present, this is about protecting people for years to come. We very much hope that our report will lead to a safer environment for patients and this industry in the future.”

The review assessed the current rules in England for:

·      Products or devices used in cosmetic interventions, e.g. dermal fillers

·      Practitioners of cosmetic interventions, be they health professionals or non-health professionals

·      Providers, be they large providers or small high-street beauty clinics

·      Procedure that range from surgical operations to non-surgical treatments

·      Insurance and indemnity requirements

·      Patient information and consent

·      The advertising and marketing of cosmetic interventions

Micro-pulses of laser energy safely heats the tissues below the skin’s surface to reduce redness on the face, fades acne scars and age spots, reduces the size of pores and restores a more vibrant and youthful glow.

With no downtime, this laser treatment is popularly known as a ‘lunchtime’ facial, as it only takes 30 minutes and you’re able to resume normal activities immediately after. With benefits after only one treatment of producing a vibrant glow, this treatment is also a favourite pre-red-carpet treatment for Celebrities.

This ever-popular treatment is only available in Kenilworth at Shine Medical Cosmetic Clinic, recently awarded the title of Best Laser treatment clinic in Warwickshire.

Because Laser Genesis is non-invasive, there are very few risks or side effects. Occasionally there may be a slight redness after treatment, but this usually disappears within 1-5 days of having the treatment(variable according to skin type).

The hidden dangers caused by intense sun exposure

As we all know, the onset of summer, with warmer and sunnier weather always enhances the enjoyment of being outside for many people. However, it is always important to remember that exposure to sun can have damaging effects on our skin unless we take precautions to prevent it.

It is a myth that having a sun-tan is a sign of health and well-being. In reality, the presence of a sun-tan is a sign of skin damage caused by UV rays.

Excessive, unprotected sun exposure causes premature skin ageing, otherwise called photo-ageing, resulting in coarse or craggy skin, pigmentation, uneven skin texture and premature fine lines and wrinkles. More seriously, excessive sun exposure significantly increases the risk of developing various types of skin cancers including melanomas, which can be life-threatening if undetected and untreated.

It is therefore, easy to understand why it is important to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation.

Tips to protect your skin from harmful sun exposure

·      Wear appropriate protective clothing

·      Wear sunglasses

·      Wear a hat

·      Avoid sunbathing or intense exposure to sunlight

·      Apply SPF regularly (at least SPF 30)

·      Keep well hydrated- drink plenty of water, at least 2.0 to 2.5 litres/day (unless medically contra-indicated)

·      Keep your skin moisturised, making sure to use a moisturiser that improves the hydration of the skin from within

·      Use anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C serums, which boost protection to your skin from environmental insults including UV rays

·      Check your skin regularly for sun damage or the appearance of new skin lesions

·      Check that any existing lesions do not change in nature – such as growing in size, becoming irregular in shape or colour, or start to bleed or            become painful.

·      If you notice any suspicious lesions, get them checked urgently by a medical professional. It may need further tests or it may need to be                    removed urgently.

At Shine Medical Cosmetic Clinic, there are a varied range of sunscreens available from the ZO Skin Health range as well as effective moisturisers and Vitamin C serums -  Shine Medical Cosmetic Skin Clinic - medical grade skin care (shinemedicalcosmeticclinic.co.uk

Cutera is a laser company based in San Francisco and founded in 1998. They have pioneered laser technology over many years and are considered as world leaders in the provision of medical laser technology and laser machines.

The Cutera XEO laser system is a multi-application technology used for over 92% of all laser and light-based treatments. It’s a non-invasive, non-ablative and customizable system that allows treatments to be personalised according to skin type, skin colour, and skin concerns. As such, the Cutera XEO technology delivers a level of flexibility and individualisation that is not available from other laser systems.

Cutera XEO combines 2 laser applications, the LimeLight and Nd:YAG, which enables the system to address a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Facial rejuvenation and revitalisation
  • Skin tone, texture and quality
  • Fine lines and wrinkle
  • Active acne
  • Acne scarring
  • Surgical scars
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation and pigmented lesions
  • Redness and rosacea
  • Thread veins
  • Unwanted hair

Laser Genesis

Laser Genesis is the Cutera XEO signature treatment, using the Nd:YAG laser. By stimulating new collagen production, it can treat a range of skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven texture
  • Dullness
  • Redness, including rosacea or melasma
  • Large pores
  • Active acne and acne scars

It is a pain-free treatment which can be done in 30 minutes and with no downtime – hence it’s nickname “the lunchtime laser facial”. It is also low risk and one of the safest procedures available. Unlike some other laser treatments, it is also suitable for any skin types, tone or colour. Whilst results can be seen after just one treatment, a course of 4-6 treatments are recommended for full benefit, with benefits lasting for 6 -12 months.

Laser Genesis can also be combined with the Limelight laser to provide a 2D skin facial rejuvenation, by treating two different layers of the skin for added benefit. Whilst the Nd:YAG wavelength of 1064nm targets the mid-dermis to stimulate collagen production, the Limelight addresses more superficial pigmentation, sallowness, enlarged pores, fine lines and telangiectasia.

Laser pigmentation

Laser pigmentation treatments are delivered using the Limelight technology. This specially designed laser is absorbed only by the cells containing excessive concentrations of melanin. It does not affect the surrounding tissues or remove the normal skin colour. This is a non-invasive approach to revitalising skin with the advantage of improving skin tone, removing unwanted skin pigmentation and surface imperfections. Three to six treatments are usually sufficient to see results, which can be permanent, depending on the level of further sun exposure.

Laser vascular

Also referred to as spider veins, thread veins are tiny blood vessels which run close to the surface of the skin. They look like thin red or occasionally purple or blue lines. They are commonly found on the face and  legs  but they can appear anywhere on the body. Laser treatment is a safe, effective way to banish thread veins. The light from the laser is directed at the veins causing them to heat up very quickly. This heat causes the vein to break down and collapse in on itself. The damaged vein gradually dissolves and is removed through the body’s natural immune system, leaving the skin smooth and clear. Typically, 6 treatments are required to see optimum benefit.

For further information of Laser vascular treatments available at Shine Medical Cosmetic Clinic, visit:

https://www.shinemedicalcosmeticclinic.co.uk/laser-treatment---vascular-lesions

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed for permanent hair removal, and maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair.

Compared to other hair removal technology and devices, laser hair removal is the most powerful and effective method available.

Benefits of Vitamin A for Skin Health

Vitamin A helps to improve the health of your skin. They work by normalising how your skin cell functions, which in turn helps your skin to stay strong and healthy.

What are the benefits of Vitamin A?

  • Improves skin barrier function- thus protecting it from irritants and germs.
  • Improves skin cell turnover- thus, improving overall skin texture and tone.
  • Stimulates skin cells to produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid which leads to improving skin firmness, elasticity and hydration and thus, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Decreases clustering of Melanin granules – thus reducing brown spots or pigmentation.
  • Improves blood flow to the skin– taking nutrients and oxygen to the cells.
  • Repairs the cellular structure of the Epidermis – optimising your UV protection.
  • Has anti-inflammatory properties and decreases sebum production and therefore, it is used in the treatment of acne.

Where do we get Vitamin A from?

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that is naturally present in many food like fish, eggs, meat, liver, fruits, vegetables etc.

There are also various dietary supplements available in the market.

But remember, too much and too little Vitamin A is harmful for health.

Vitamin A Skin Care products

Incorporating Vitamin A in your skin care regime can be very beneficial for the reasons mentioned above.

Your skin needs to start out using small amounts of Vitamin A in a gentle and effective formula, slowly building up it’s tolerance, before you can increase into the stronger more active versions.

Choosing your Vitamin A skin care product can be very confusing, as there are many different forms and not all products are suited to everyone’s skin type. Using the wrong products can lead to potential side effects. Therefore, it is really important that you discuss with a medical professional before starting Vitamin A skin care products regarding what product is best for you.

If you want to discuss about how you can incorporate Vitamin A into your skin care regime, contact Shine Medical Cosmetic Clinic.

What is 3D Powersculpt and how does it work?

3D Powersculpt is one of the latest revolutionary treatment for body shaping, sculpting and muscle toning. The technology uses High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic energy which cause High Tension Muscle Contractions of the muscles throughout the treatment, much greater than can be achieved through a conventional workout. This therefore exceeds the effects of an intense workout by exceeding the highest amount of tension your muscles can exert and hold under normal condition (Maximal Voluntary Contractions). An additional benefit of Powersculpt is that due to its mode of action, unlike conventional workouts, it does not lead to an accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles. This lactic acid production in conventional exercise is what creates the muscle pain and aching during and after workouts.

What are the benefits of 3D Powersculpt?

As a consequence of the stimulation of muscle contractions, Powersculpt results in muscle building, toning, sculpting and fat burning. Just one 30-minute Powersculpt treatment is equivalent to 20,000 crunches, squats, curls or leg extensions. So, with Powersculpt, you get all the benefits of a high intensity workout whilst lying down for 30 minutes, without any lactic acid production. All gain, no pain!

Which muscles can be treated with 3D Powersculpt?

Most commonly, 3D Powersculpt is used to treat abdominal muscles, but it can also be used to treat arms, buttocks, legs and thighs.

Who can benefit from 3D Powersculpt

Anyone may benefit from 3D Powersculpt treatments, ranging from professional athletes looking to maintain existing muscle tone and bulk through to older people looking to restore muscle bulk and tone.

How many treatments do I need and how long does it take?

Usually, benefits are seen after 4 treatments, but for maximum benefit, a course of 8 treatments are recommended. When receiving a course of treatments, it is recommended that 2-3 treatments are carried out per week with at least 48 hours between treatments. Therefore, a course of 8 treatments can be completed in 3-4 weeks.

The skin is the largest organ of our body and it plays several important roles in protecting our body against the outside world. This is vital for our health and wellbeing. That is the reason why protecting and looking after our skin is vital. The functions of skin include:

  • Barrier function- prevents invasion from irritants and germs
  • Protection- from UV Radiation and production of Vitamin D
  • Prevents moisture loss
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Vehicle for removal+ elimination of toxins from the body
  • Produces collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid- which provides structural framework to the skin.
  • Sensory function-the sensory receptors in the skin helps you feel various sensations like touch, pain, heat, cold etc.

Basic skin structure

The skin is made up of several layers:

Epidermis – the outermost layer which acts as protection for underlying layers

Dermis – the middle layer contains collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid which are essential for skin health

Hypodermis – consisting of layers of subcutaneous fat to provide protection and structure.

SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) –a fibrous layer overlying muscle layers.

Skin cell cycle

Skin cell renewal occurs within the deeper layers of the skin with new skin cells moving outward toward the epidermis. This process takes 6-8 weeks. The deeper layers of the skin contains connective tissue with collagen and elastin fibres that provide the support required for the skin's flexibility and strength.

What happens when our skin ages?

The ageing process affects the entire facial structure, including skin, subcutaneous fat, muscles and facial bones.

As we age, the following changes take place within our body:

  • The outer skin layer (epidermis) thins out. In the dermis, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid levels decrease gradually over time especially after the age of 30. This leads to loss of structure and elasticity of the skin which causes fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity, pigment changes and sagging of the skin.
  • There is also gradual loss of subcutaneous fat which contributes to the loss of structure that holds up the skin.
  • The skin cell turnover slows down- this in turn, slows down the regeneration process of the cell renewal in the deeper layers of the skin. This causes reduction in the density of the skin and uneven texture.

Protection of our skin - is vital to promote healthy skin function and to slow down the ageing process. It is important to drink plenty of water (at least 2 litres) to avoid dehydration and eat a healthy balanced diet. It is also very important to use sunscreen (SPF 30+) on a daily basis to protect against the harmful UV rays, which can also accelerate the signs of ageing. Another really important step in looking after our skin is to have a good regular skin care regime using medical grade skin care products. At Shine Medical Cosmetic Clinic, we have a wide range of medical grade skin care products which can be tailored to your skin care needs. According to the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Society, Non-surgical Facelifts have become one of the most sought after treatments over the last few years. There are several advantages of non-surgical techniques over a surgical face lift. There is no anaesthetic, no incisions, no scarring, and no required rest or recovery time.

Non-surgical techniques are also far less expensive than a surgical face lift. HIFU treatment is endorsed by renowned UK Plastic Surgeons as a safe alternative to going under the knife.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU is the latest Non-Surgical Facelift Treatment which uses High Intensity Focused Ultrasound energy to both lift and tighten loose or sagging skin on the neck and the face.

But what is HIFU Treatment and how does it work?? What are the benefits of HIFU??

Before we can understand these, we first have to understand what happens to our skin when we age.

What happens when the skin ages?

What is High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and how does it work?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is the latest innovation in cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that provides a Non-Surgical Facelift . High intensity ultrasound energy is delivered deep into the skin, which causes the tissues to heat up rapidly. This stimulates the cells to produce more collagen. By causing new collagen formation, the procedure increases the structural integrity of the skin and this leads to the beneficial effects seen with HIFU.

One of the particular benefits of HIFU is that the ultrasound waves are able to penetrate a lot deeper than other techniques/energy devices, being able to penetrate up to 4.5mm into skin tissues and as deep as the SMAS (superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic system) layer under the skin. By being able to penetrate deeper below the surface, HIFU is able to stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin more effectively and without damaging the outer layer of the skin. This  is what results in the prolonged tightening of the skin for 12-18 months after just one treatment, as opposed to other treatment techniques, which are not able to penetrate as deeply and therefore require multiple and repeated treatments to achieve the same benefits.

Benefits of HIFU:

Some benefits can be seen immediately after treatment, however more benefits are usually seen in in 2-3 months and maximal benefits are seen in 4-6 months. The benefits usually last 12-18 months.

HIFU has many aesthetic benefits including:

  •     tightening of the skin
  •     improvement of the skin's elasticity and firmness
  •     reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
  •     tightening of sagging skin on the neck ( turkey neck )
  •     lifting the cheeks, eyebrows, and eyelids
  •     enhancing jawline definition and reduction of sagging skin around jawline (jowls)
  •     fat reduction
If you’re looking for a HIFU/ Non Surgical Face Lift treatment that is quick, cheaper than other options, safe, effective, non-invasive and with long lasting benefits, HIFU is an excellent option.

HIFU BODY

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) Treatment can be used for body concerns as well. HIFU Body is designed to target and reduce stubborn pockets of fat on our body. It can be used to treat areas like abdomen, hips, flanks, buttocks, thighs. Benefits are usually seen after 3-6 months and usually last for 12-18 months. It can also be combined with muscle toning/body sculpting treatment like Powersculpt.
